According to the latest Report of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM 2019/2020 Global Report) a rising number of entrepreneurs strive to make a difference in the world by launching their businesses. Other motives that have an impact on people starting an entrepreneurial career are the wish “to build great wealth”, “to continue a family tradition” or “to earn a living because jobs are scarce” (GEM 2019/2020 Global Report, p.44).
Whatever the motive, entrepreneurship is on the rise over the past two decades and considered as an “engine for change”. However, there are significant differences in the number of entrepreneurial activities around the globe which are often influenced by cultural factors such as fear of failure, public funding and taxation, support structures and educational programs. In addition, differences are also domain specific, while entrepreneurs in the engineering sector seem to face certain expectations with regard to social responsibility.
Institutions of higher education have recognized for some time now that entrepreneurship is not only a field of business management but also an interdisciplinary one and have since been offering special programs or even degree programs that teach combined disciplines such as engineering and entrepreneurship. The Special Session addresses all kinds of research around the topic of entrepreneurship in engineering. It focuses on questions such as: What can be done to foster entrepreneurial activities early in Engineering Education? Which cultural aspects have an impact on the innovative power of different countries? Etc. We are looking forward to receiving your best practices, experiences, research and discussions on the topic.
