Keynote address by Huang Guoxing

Development of Remote Education in China

Abstract:

The keynote talk introduces the development of remote education in China during the recent 30 years. At the middle of 90’s last century, Chinese government, China Central Radio and TV University (CCRTVU) , the university networking college, make great contribution in pushing remote education in China. We analyzed remote education structure, running model and work flow, and gave some statistic date analyze  concerning  the education process. At finally we show some feedback from different level of the peoples.

New communication technologies, particularly the Internet, appear to offer exciting possibilities for overcoming geographical access and cost barriers to learning. Although remote education is one of the new form in education domain and has no long history, but it shows a lot of benefits in a big developing country China. From the view point of country, it can partly solve the education raw deal between urban and rural. CCRTVU and its branches, university networking schools make great contribution in network construction and education platform construction. One of the important factor pushing the remote education fast and effective allover the country is the powerful support from the government and universities. Most of the people likes the model of remote education and they really get benefit from remote education.

Short biography:

Mr. Huang Guoxing is a professor of East China Normal University(ECNU) in Shanghai. He was graduated from ECNU in 1974 and work there until now. Being a research fellow and scientist trainee he was stay in University of Twente the Netherland for several years. After his return to ECNU, he was the dean of computer science department from 1994 to 2001. From 2001 to 2006, he was the deputy of software engineering institute ECNU. He was the group leader of “ China Computing Curricula 2002” project. His research interest include  intelligent information system, data mining technology, software engineering and educational theories . He is also the key member of some social association of the information technology society in Shanghai.

East China Normal University (ECNU) was founded in October 1951 on the site of Great China University with most of its faculties from Great China University joined by some faculties from a number of other universities such as Fudan University and Tongji University. Among the total staff of over 4,500, there are nearly 1,600 full-time teachers, including 9 national academicians and nearly 1,100 professors and associate professors, many of whom enjoy high reputation in their respective academic circles. Besides 12,000 full-time undergraduate and 4,000 graduate students, every year nearly 1,000 international students from all over theworld are attracted to ECNU by its superior strength in many disciplines as well as in teaching Chinese language and Chinese culture.
